Humour in the Classroom
Do you have a low engagement of children in the classroom, lousy student memory retention, no motivation? Does COVID-19 have consequences on your classroom too?
Usage of humour in the classroom can help you with this. We will cover what humour is, how to use it, where it is appropriate, how it works and improve the engagement and motivation of the students in the classroom. We will also cover how humour in the classroom can help with memory retention.
What is humour?
Humour is all about jokes, witty remarks and different educational material. Comedians are the most common ones using humour in their day to day lives; they make remarks, tell jokes, etcetera to make the audience laugh. But what about teachers? Can you use humour as well?
The humour effect is based on a response mechanism called humour response. This humour response works as a protection mechanism (similar to fight-or-flight reflexes), where humour responds to a threat. Children tend to laugh when something happens outside of their control. But there is another mechanism, the anticipation factor, which makes people laugh when they anticipate one result in the story, but they get something very different. And understanding this method for educational purposes makes your class very different – easy to handle, relax the atmosphere and give students with problems an easier way to prove themselves.
In this seminar, you will learn about different types of humour, such as slapstick comedy or satire, that teachers worldwide use to engage their students and make them laugh while learning something new at school. This course aims to teach you how to use these techniques effectively to work for your teaching style and personality type. It’s also important to know where not to use humour! Not every lesson needs a joke or funny story! We’ll look at when we should avoid using humour as well as when we should embrace it wholeheartedly! By taking this course, you will learn all about using humour effectively to maximise student engagement during lessons without making anyone feel uncomfortable or embarrassed!
Gamification with humour is an advanced method of using humour in the classroom. It uses game elements in a non-game context. The teacher can use it to motivate students and make learning more fun. Gamification can encourage students to learn more, complete tasks, and engage in in-class activities in the classroom. In connection with humour, it is associated with positive reinforcement of learning, can build more significant relationships between students and their teacher and ease sometimes difficult digestion of facts.
By the end of the course, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of using humour in the classroom. You will be able to design your lessons supported with humour and gamification to improve your ability to cope with a difficult situation in your classroom since you will relax the learning experience and enhance student engagement.
